Fair weather feathered friend

The weather here in the Mid-South has been so gloomy. Fog and more fog and rain on top of rain. Not that we don’t need the rain, but at some point, you just want to believe the sun will show its face again. Yesterday was that day.  The sun shone for a few hours, enough time to bring out the birds, get the rock knockers calling to their mates and to do some long overdue car washing.

Druid

Silhouetted against the midday sun, the broken trunk of a long-dead tree looms like a cowled figure of a druid standing in his oak (and hickory) grove.

Weekly photo challenge: Horizon

Horizons can be open or cluttered, vast or close.

Horizons we enjoyed seeing this week:

And of course, the event horizon for horizon photos: http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/10/25/weekly-photo-challenge-horizon/

Weekly photo challenge: Good morning!

From my office window some 200 yards away, my eye was caught — again — by the startling salmon color of these surprise lilies. This group was backlit by the morning sun filtering through the canopy around it.  Especially beautiful was how the sun lit up the bases with a glorious chartreuse glow.  These lilies have been popping up all over town, random beauty in the Arkansas autumn.

And say good day to these good mornings:

Weekly photo challenge: The golden hour

Once again, better late than never. Here is our entry for the July 12 challenge: The Golden Hour. http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/07/12/the-golden-hour/

Sunshine skims over mountaintops.
Morning sun skims the tops of this mist-cloaked Ouachita ridge.

Autumn color 2011

Fall color reaches its dramatic peak in the Ouachita Mountains.

OUACHITA MOUNTAIN AUTUMN -- The fall colors are reaching their peak this week.
RED -- The two Chinese pistache trees in the parking lot put on a great foliage show in the fall, despite being whipped about by the wind.
SUNRISE -- Late fall sunrise finally reaches the canopy in the office parking lot.
EVENING SUN -- Red sunset peeps out from between slowly receding low cloud deck and the western Ouachitas.
TREE CANDY -- Sweet, wild persimmons dangle temptingly about 30 feet above ground in an increasingly bare tree on a windy, overcast day.
