Saw an unusual red bird during a lunchtime walk. A scarlet tanager? A summer tanager, or something else?  A closer look showed him to be a cardinal — a bald cardinal. One colleague suggested this poor fellow’s condition the result of an extreme case of henpecking.

HENPECKED? — A cardinal without headfeathers picks off some lunch on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

  1. What an eerie feeling this gives me. On one hand, it is quite ugly, but on the other, I can’t help feeling what an immense survival story this is. Birds are notorious for attacking those that do not look the part (as are other animals, including humans, sadly) and the whole survival of the fittest comes into play. This one has done incredibly well to survive this long.
Sad and triumphant at the same time.
