Of course, “big” is relative. This spiny fellow seems disproportionately large for his hangout. UPDATE: Thanks to Dr. Kelly Loftin of the U of Arkansas for ID’ing this fellow. It’s a wheel bug.

And of course, the big pot of big:
thats a big bug
Spiny and spindly lookin’ too, like some sci fi alien.
Yikes! It is big and scary! I’m not much of a bug person…
He was about 1.5 inches long. His spiny withers make him seem a little creepy!
That is for sure… Yet there is something marvelous about it… the sheer magic of creation. 😉
eeyuk! what is it? good picture though:)
This fellow is called a “wheel bug,” from the family of assassin bugs.
That is one interesting bug. Glad I haven’t found one of those luking around my garden. I’m nervous around bugs that move quickly and he looks like he could make tracks with those long legs!
I like your shot and the Interesting ping packs you chose – (and thank you)
Love history and your post taught me something! Had no idea about that last invasion, nor the tapestry existed! So thank YOU for posting!
Scary, check out my big – it’s a frog.
we did. that’s quite a lot of frog! great shot!
Oh – I wonder what type of bug that is – so unusual
I’ll have to check in with our friendly neighborhood extension entomologist to see. He sure looks like some Hollywood alien though!
Let me know if you do find out – so curious about this one.
Will do!
Thanks to Dr. Kelly Loftin at the U of Arkansas for identifying this guy as a “wheel bug.” (there’s a link in the post now to the Wiki entry for this insect.) Thanks for asking!
A wheel bug…even an unusual name
Never seen anything like it. Part of the mantis family? (Okay, so I have seen something like it, but not really…)
Same here — hoping one of our university folks might know!
what the heck??? wasssat?
I have no idea, but have emailed a local entomologist to see if he can Id this guy. I’ll post the result when it’s known. Thanks for stoppin by!
you can use this again if the theme is ever ugly.
LOL!
Great entry! That is one big, ugly looking insect!
I’m amazed at how many people have commented on this poor big bug. Good thing he doesn’t read the blog, he’d have self esteem issues by now! 🙂 Thanks for taking time to visit and comment.
Yikes! I’ve never seen one of those! That’s big!
Great shot!
Wow that looks scary & huge!
He’s really not all that big — maybe 2 inches, but he does look big compared to that weed he’s standing in!
