Don’t know what it is, but it was running across the driveway this afternoon in the warm March sun.
(JUST IN: One of our friendly neighborhood U of Arkansas extension entomologists has ID’d this fellow as an antlion. Learn something new every day!)
TRILOBITE-Y -- Armor plates, fuzzy legs and pincers that look like they mean business. This creature looks like a throwback to another eon.
Thanks for stopping by. Apparently this fellow spends a lot of time at the bottom of a sandpit trapping ants for dinner! So being in the driveway was unusual for him.
He makes little sand pits in the summer and traps ants… hence the name “ant lion”. You can take a twig and mimic the footsteps of an ants in his sand pit and he’ll jump out from beneath the sand to catch his dinner. Very cool.
Goodness how big was it???
This fella was about an inch long and three-eighths of an inch from ground to the top of his arched back.
Those pincers, fangs . . . ! Great detail!
Thanks! This fella was certainly an unusual find this afternoon!
Wow – I have not seen this before. An inch long!? My goodness.
whatever it is it fits the theme for sure
Thanks! Lots of unusual critters up here in the Ouachitas! Have a great weekend.
Unusual and unwelcome for me! Good one.
Thanks for stopping by!
This is one of the most interesting and different photos I have seen…lucky you to have seen him!

I find creepy-crawlies very…creepy! But funnily enough this trilobite is oddly fascinating!
He was a curious little guy. Thanks for stopping by!
I’d be running across the driveway in the opposite direction if I saw this unusual bug. Those pincers look a little unfriendly.
Ha! Apparently only to be feared if you’re an ant!
Wow, interesting and unusual. Nice post.
Eeeeeek!
He doesn’t look very friendly, does he?

Neat! Thanks for the info!
Wow, that is something to see. Great shot.
